A few years ago, our dear friends and partners at Peace & Plenty Farm called us with a request. They had some old friends in town from New York City…could they drive to the top of nearby Obsidian Ridge Vineyard and catch the sunset over a bottle of Obsidian?

That evening culminated in the opening this past July 1st of artist Kara Walker’s Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine) at San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art. More about our work with Kara on this project is detailed here.

It may be trite to say that wine creates moments, builds social bonds, and develops community. Yet sometimes we ourselves are in awe of just how true this is. Kara Walker is known to be one of the greatest living artists of her generation, and we are honored that something about the visit to our vineyard inspired a creative spark that resulted in moving 49,000 lbs (70 bags, 700 lbs each) of obsidian from our vineyard to the SFMOMA in downtown San Francisco.

The making of wine teaches us that the answer to creativity and community is always yes. The more we can foster this spirit, the stronger our societies become and the richer our lives get. The more we share our wine, the more we learn about ourselves, others, and the worlds they inhabit.

We are honored to collaborate with these artists, dreamers, and creators. They are one of us.
